SPON Annual Meeting
Saturday, September 19, 2026
9:00 AM – 11:30 AM

OASIS Senior Center, Corona del Mar

Topics of Discussion:

Managing Change Without Losing Newport Beach’s Character

City decisions being made today will shape Newport Beach for decades, including:

  • A proposed new Police Headquarters at Civic Center Park that could reduce park space by 4 acres and impact wildlife, native plants, trails, viewing areas, and natural drainage. The City plans to spend over $1 million on a feasibility study without evaluating alternative sites. Resident participation is encouraged.
  • The recently approved Housing Element and Land Use Plan include zoning overlays that increase height and density limits without a Charter 423 (“Greenlight”) vote. The plan could allow up to 15,000 new housing units by 2029, raising concerns about traffic and infrastructure impacts.
  • A Newport Beach Stewardship Association initiative on the November 3 ballot would reduce the number of authorized housing units and reverse the zoning changes.
  • Three additional proposed initiatives may also appear on the ballot, including stricter term limits, district-based City Council elections, and expanded transparency requirements for city meetings, records, and public disclosures.

JWA Settlement Agreement and Curfew Renewal

The airport settlement agreement and curfew expire on December 31, 2030, and are not permanent protections for our community. City and County officials have not yet begun renewal discussions, even though the process—including negotiations, environmental review, FAA review, and court approval—takes approximately three years.

Without renewal, residents could face increased commercial flights, expanded operating hours, more aircraft noise and pollution, and declining quality of life and property values. Flight limits, passenger caps, noise standards, compliance monitoring, and curfew protections could all end after 2030.
The SPON Board of Directors and the Airport Working Group of Orange County (AWG), both signatories to the Settlement Agreement, are preparing for renewal efforts. Early and strong support from Newport Beach residents will be critical in strengthening negotiations with County and City officials.

Join SPON as a Member and Stay Informed

Change is happening in Newport Beach.  The question is: will residents be informed and involved early or after decisions are already in motion? SPON exists to educate and advocate for our residents, so they are informed about issues impacting our community and express their voice before decisions are made. Annual membership is $50 and is tax-deductible.  Your membership and donations provide the resources we need for technical, legal, and operating expenses.  Our Board of Directors is a group of volunteers who contribute many hours of service each year to review plans proposed by the City, attend city meetings, participate in Advisory Committees, and report back to you. To renew your membership or donate, visit the SPON website at SPON | (Still Protecting Our Newport) or send a check to SPON, P.O. Box 102, Balboa Island, CA. 92662
Newport Beach would be a different place without SPON protecting our community and coastal areas since 1974.
